ah, the beauty of the pacific northwest.
northern california is considered one of the most amazing places in the country to live. not only is it home to a major metropolitan city, bursting with things to do, but it boasts accessibility to wine country, ocean wildlife, ski resorts and national parks.
one of the closest national monuments to the bay area, muir woods, is located just 12 miles north of the golden gate bridge. as we headed to see it on sunday, we were struck by the serenity of the secluded area surrounding the woods. miles of steep, narrow, winding road lead us through the marin headland hills to the woods. the terrain clearly explained why redwood canyon escaped the mass-logging to support the gold rush of the late 1800's - its steep and inaccessible slopes.
once in the woods, we were met with fresh, cool air, a light misty rain, lush green vegetation, and hundreds of ancient redwood trees towering above us. we truly enjoyed an afternoon of strolling the trails, searching the streams for varieties of salmon, and simply admiring the beauty of God's creation.
an amazing life: 909 AD - 1930
this cracked me up! with the enormous redwood behind him, mark is hugging a sapling, by comparison:)

I love Muir Woods! We went there many times growing up. Isn't it amazing? I have vivid memories of looking up at those huge, massive trees as a little girl and thinking, "wow - God made these??" I'm glad you are exploring all that Nor Cal has to offer. It's absolutely beautiful!
